The Hindi-Urdu Flagship Program is designed to bring undergraduate students with a basic understanding* of Hindi and/or Urdu to advanced professional fluency in both languages within a four year time span. As such the ideal Flagship applicant has:
already mastered the basics of Hindi and/or Urdu*
a general aptitude for language learning
applied for undergraduate admission to UT Austin (in process or already accepted)
Prospective students with no background in Hindi Urdu can achieve the required skill level by attending an intensive 12-week summer course at the University of Texas. The first such course will be held in summer 2008. Applicants interested in taking this course can indicate their interest by filling out the standard online Flagship application (and selecting the “Summer Course” check box).
Transfer students and current UT undergraduates are considered on a case-by-case basis. Juniors or seniors should bear in mind, however, that the Flagship curriculum requirements may extend an undergraduate career beyond the standard four years. Interested transfers and current UT students can apply to the program through our online application.
Graduate students should not apply to the Flagship unless interested in acquiring a second bachelor’s degree.
For more information on eligibility for the Flagship, view our extensive list of Frequently Asked Questions or email us at hindiurdu@austin.utexas.edu.
*Basic knowledge of Hindi Urdu involves the ability to hold a simple conversation (introductions, everyday topics, use of different tenses) and recognition of the Devanagari and/or Nashatliq scripts. A faculty member of the HUF Team will help determine your language level through a simple interview (phone or in person) prior to admission.
